When a business decides it needs a new website or webshop, the big question arises almost immediately: what technology should it be built on? The opinions circulating in the market swing between extremes. One camp says WordPress is an outdated blogging engine and only fully custom software is worth it. The other camp says there's no point spending thousands on coding when anyone can click together a website in an afternoon with a ready-made template.
As a senior web developer I see these dilemmas every day. The truth, however, is far more nuanced. In this article we'll clear up the concepts and I'll show you how to get the best of both worlds — through custom-coded WordPress systems — for your business's digital presence.
1. The trap of "click-and-drag" templates — Why are most business websites slow?
Many people make the mistake of equating the WordPress name with the mass-produced ready-made templates available on the market (e.g. Avada, Divi) and visual page builders (e.g. Elementor).
When a hobby developer builds a site, they typically install a heavy ready-made template and then stack 20–30 different plugins on top to achieve the desired features. From the outside the site might look fine, but looking into the source code, you find a ready-made disaster.
What is the problem with this?
- Brutal slowness: Ready-made templates need to work for everything — from a florist to a car dealership. As a result they load an incredible amount of unnecessary code (CSS and JavaScript) in the background that literally suffocates the server.
- Security vulnerabilities: The more independent plugins you use, the greater the chance someone will hack your site. A single outdated, poorly written plugin is enough to compromise the entire database.
- Limited possibilities: As your business grows and you need a custom API integration (e.g. connecting to your invoicing system, CRM, or warehouse software), templates hit walls. They cannot be flexibly shaped.
2. Fully custom development — The price of freedom
The other end of the spectrum is when an agency or developer builds you a website from scratch, without frameworks (or with their own closed CMS).
The advantages are undeniable:
- Only the code that is actually needed is included.
- Maximum security, as there is no public source code for hackers to scan.
- No technical limits.
Why is this still not ideal for every SME?
Fully custom development has a brutal cost implication and the development time can run into months. On top of that there is the risk of "developer captivity": if the programmer disappears, no one else will understand their unique code, and managing the admin interface is often a nightmare for non-technical clients.
3. The golden middle ground: Template-free, custom-coded WordPress
There is a third path that combines the advantages of both worlds. This is what I have committed to at MonkeyDesign: developing custom WordPress themes and plugins coded from scratch.
Here, WordPress is used not as a click-and-drag toy but as a stable, secure, and incredibly flexible engine (backend). The frontend and features, however, are coded by me from the drawing board, with clean source code (PHP, modern JavaScript, CSS3), based on unique visual designs created in Figma.
Why is this the best decision for your business?
🚀 Lightning-fast loading (Technical SEO foundation)
Since the site contains no unnecessary lines of code or heavy visual builders, its loading speed is phenomenal. Google's algorithm loves clean code and fast sites (Core Web Vitals), so you can outrank the competition on organic search by miles.
🔒 Maximum security
No unnecessary third-party plugins. If a specific feature is needed (e.g. custom form, calculator, or API connection), I programme it custom. Fewer plugins = negligible security risk.
✍️ Easy, independent editing
Although serious programming work sits behind the scenes, you as the owner won't feel any of the complexity. I set up the admin interface so you can comfortably swap texts, upload images, or publish new blog posts without any coding knowledge.
📈 Unlimited scalability
If you later want to add a WooCommerce webshop with thousands of products behind your website, or connect it to an external software system, the system is ready. No walls, no limits.
Summary: Which should you choose?
If a simple digital business card is enough for you and Google ranking or speed doesn't matter, a cheap ready-made template will do. If you need a bank-grade, globally unique custom software, pay millions for a full agency.
But if you want a professional, premium-looking, lightning-fast, and secure sales tool for your business that serves your needs long-term — without burning money needlessly — then custom-coded WordPress is your path.
